Coats for Kids 2018
As the holiday shopping season officially began on November 23rd , the day after Thanksgiving, around 70 area children received a free and much-needed gift as the Knights of Columbus distributed new winter coats to those in need at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling on Black Friday. The Knights of St. Michael the Archangel Council #14823 based out of the Base’s Catholic Community sponsored the event for military families and civilians with base access. In addition to the distribution in DC, the Knights’ councils across North America held distributions on and around Black Friday and throughout the winter with an estimated 115,000 coats to be distributed this year. Knights will be distributing more coats in the District of Columbia in the lead-up to Christmas in several parishes in the City. The Knights gave away over 105,000 coats across North America last year.
“Each year we seem to see more stories of greed than thanks mere minutes after Thanksgiving,” said State Deputy Otto Heck. “As Knights of Columbus, we seek to share our thankfulness by serving our neighbors in need – particularly the young families in our community.”
He added, “Many Catholics seek ways to put their faith into action. In addition to praying for those in need, they may want hands-on opportunities to apply their energy and goodwill and truly make a difference. Through the Knights, our members can work side-by-side with other men to make a difference for those in need.”
